Seven sensational saltwater pools on Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria continues to stand out as a paradise for holidaymakers. The island is one of the most versatile destinations around, offering an array of spectacular nature parks, idyllic beaches and, of course, the subject of this article: its natural swimming pools.

Unlike the island’s best-known beaches, you will need to head north to visit its most remarkable natural pools. Gran Canaria has numerous tourist attractions in the south, so we recommend exploring the north if you are looking for a unique experience away from the main tourist hotspots.

Where are the five best natural swimming pools in Gran Canaria?

First, natural swimming pools can be defined as coastal areas protected by a barrier that prevents waves from entering. This barrier may be either natural or man-made. These pools allow you to swim, snorkel or simply enjoy a refreshing dip in salt water safely.

We recommend visiting these charming little spots even if you are not planning to go for a swim. They are well worth seeing simply to admire the beauty of the surroundings in which these wonderful natural pools in Gran Canaria are located.

1. Las Salinas de Agaete

Las Salinas natural swimming pool is located in the municipality of Agaete and is known for its fortress-shaped breakwater. It is one of the main attractions in one of the most beautiful towns in the north-west of the island.

Las Salinas boasts sunbathing areas that are perfect for relaxing in the sunshine, as well as easy access. It is located very close to the port connecting Gran Canaria with Tenerife and to a promenade lined with restaurants specialising in fresh fish and seafood.

To get there by car, you can park near Puerto de las Nieves and walk along the promenade until you reach the natural pools. Be sure to visit the town of Agaete, which is just a few minutes away by car.

2. Piscinas de Roque Pietro

In the northern municipality of Santa María de Guía, surrounded by a large stone barrier, you will find one of Gran Canaria’s best-known natural swimming spots: the Roque Prieto pools.

These pools are particularly peaceful and safe, with several very shallow areas, although it is always advisable to keep an eye on sea conditions. Their remote location means that there are few facilities nearby, but the journey is well worth it if you are looking to enjoy the tranquillity and crystal-clear water.

Spend a full day soaking up the sun and enjoying the sea at the Roque Prieto natural pools.

3. La Furnia de Gáldar

Located in the northern municipality of Gáldar, La Furnia is one of the many wonders found in this beautiful town. Hidden between the cliffs, it is one of Gran Canaria’s most spectacular natural swimming pools.

To reach this small cove, you will need to follow a path through plantations of one of the island’s most iconic products: the famous Canary Island bananas. After passing Dos Roques Beach, continue along the path through the ravine, which will lead you to this beautiful natural pool, suitable for visitors of all ages.

Unlike some of the island’s other natural pools, La Furnia is located away from the town centre, so there are no restaurants or leisure facilities nearby. However, you can always visit Gáldar’s historic quarter after your swim.

4. Los Charcones en Arucas

Located on the coast of the municipality of Arucas, close to the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Los Charcones is a collection of natural pools surrounded by stone and sand in the area of Bañaderos.

Its excellent location is one of its main advantages, as it is close to the motorway and less than 200 metres from El Puertillo Beach, where you will find a variety of restaurants. There is also a free car park less than a five-minute walk away.

Los Charcones in Arucas has a wonderful promenade where you can enjoy the sunshine and the sea while watching one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island. Spend a full day exploring Arucas and discover one of northern Gran Canaria’s hidden gems.

5. Las Piscinas de la Laja

Just outside Gran Canaria’s capital, near La Laja Beach, you will find our final recommendation. These natural pools are particularly popular with local swimmers and tourists, who flock to them during the summer months.

The site consists of two large bathing areas surrounded by volcanic rock, as well as a small sandy cove. The pools are located at the end of the seafront promenade and have dedicated parking areas that can be accessed whether you are travelling towards Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or leaving the city.

After spending the morning sightseeing in the nearby historic district of Vegueta, a refreshing swim in these wonderful natural pools is the perfect way to end your day.
